A Tale of Two Dynasties
The Rovers have dominated twice — once as the founding team of a small-town club with British roots, and again decades later at the top of the East Bay’s premier league.
Today the Rovers field an open-age 8v8 side and an Over-40 team in the East Bay Premier Soccer League — and send teams to the King Cup in Las Vegas every year.
Origins
Roots in the British Isles.
The Rovers were born in 1987 as the founding team of the Clayton Soccer Club, a community club in Contra Costa County built deliberately in the image of British football. The teams that followed carried the same tradition — the Orient, the Wanderers, Clayton Town, the Royal Oaks — each with its own banner and shield, all battling through the promotion-and-relegation divisions of the East Bay Senior Soccer League.
From the beginning, the Rovers were the flagship. And what they built wasn’t one great era — it was two. First a dynasty in Clayton, and then, a generation later, another one in Berkeley.
The First Dynasty — Clayton, 1990s

Six straight A-division titles under managers Jeff Green, Danny Cooke and Mac Couto.

In 1999–2000 the Rovers completed the league and cup treble — only the third team in EBSSL history to do it.

The Second Dynasty — Berkeley, 2021–Present
Rulers of the premier division.
A generation after Clayton, the Rovers rule again — five straight seasons on top of the East Bay Premier Soccer League, and the run isn’t over.

In both 2023 and 2024 the Rovers swept the league, Association Cup and Referees Cup — echoing the treble of 1999–2000, twice over.

Timeline
Clayton to Berkeley.
1987
The founding. The Clayton Soccer Club is established with the Rovers as its first team — an over-30 side built on British soccer tradition, playing in the East Bay Senior Soccer League.
1990s
The first dynasty. Under Jeff Green, Danny Cooke and Mac Couto, the Rovers win the A-division championship six seasons in a row, becoming the standard-bearers of the EBSSL.
2000
The treble. The 1999–2000 side captures the league title and both cups in a single season — a feat achieved by only two teams before them in league history.
2008
The move west. New leadership takes the club to Berkeley
2021–26
The second dynasty. Five consecutive EBPSL championships from 2021–22 through 2025–26, with back-to-back trebles in 2023 and 2024 — ten trophies in five seasons at the top of the East Bay’s premier division.
2024
Kings of Vegas too. Mid-dynasty, the club adds the King Cup Over-48 championship in Las Vegas — silverware on the road to go with the haul at home.
2026
Still growing. Fresh off five straight titles, the Rovers expand for 2026–27 — launching a new Over-40 team and fielding an open-age side in the EBPSL’s newly formed open 8v8 division.
